Goals & vision of LTA BOOST

The LTA BOOST project will boost the development of “blue food for green transition”.

Overall goal

The overall goal of LTA BOOST is to develop Low Trophic species Aquaculture (LTA) in Danish waters to exploit our underutilised native resources fitting into the transition to more sustainable food production.

This is achieved by opening the three bottlenecks in production:

  1. Stable commercial-scale seed production.
  2. Efficient grow out methods suited for Danish waters.
  3. Cost-efficient water treatment for on-land facilities.

Vision

The vision is to use two high-value species – the bivalve European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) and the red seaweed species dulse (Palmaria palmata) – to boost LTA production in Danish waters and develop LTA production technology with a wider perspective, especially in relation to hatchery technologies.

Ambitions

Specifically for flat oyster, it is the ambition to create technologies resulting in a stable annual production of 2-6 million disease-free spats to the industry and new grow out systems that can deliver high survival rates and fast growth to reach commercial size within a 2-3-year cycle resulting in a production of 3,000 tonnes flat oysters annually.

For dulse, the specific ambition is to establish a seed bank for year-round seed supply, a land-based grow out system and a scalable, cost-efficient sea rig system for high-yield production in open water for an annual production of at least 200 tonnes dulse.

To reach the specific goals for the two species, it is the ambition to develop common technologies in the hatchery in relation to water processing and feed production that can ensure a bio-secure production of seed that have potential for wider application in all LTA or land-based primary production of marine species.
