Biosecurity and ecosystem services (WP4)

The aim of work package 4 is to secure a safe and high-quality production and mitigate risks in relation to biosecurity and water quality.

Background and aim

Seawater is the common medium to grow oyster and dulse. Both on land under controlled conditions or at sea, water quality is crucial to secure safe, high-quality production and mitigate potential risks of Low Trophic species Aquaculture (LTA).

Biosecurity management programs are required for all hatcheries - to avoid pathogens, and to circumvent potential outbreaks and subsequent mortalities.

Special focus on technology innovation for the outlets of land-based aquaculture facilities will include new methods and clean technologies to ensure the quality of effluent to the environment.

Tasks

WP4 is divided into four tasks to cover biosecurity and water quality in all phases of the project:

  1. Biosecurity procedures and risk assessment for the management of LTA.
  2. Sustainable water cleaning technology development.
  3. Environmental monitoring.
  4. Ecosystem service evaluation.
